Terms of use

Driftnote is a tool for planning and drafting stories, available as a website and an iOS app. Most of it runs on your own device and needs no account. An optional account keeps one desk across several devices.

You keep every right in everything you write here. No licence to it is claimed, taken, or implied. It is not published, not shared, and not used to train any model.

The permission needed to run the service is narrow and obvious: if you sign in, your writing is stored and transmitted so it can be shown back to you on your devices. That is all it is for, and it ends when you delete it.

You are responsible for what happens under your account and for keeping access to the email address it uses. Tell us if you think someone else is in it. Settings lists the devices signed in and will end any of them.

One person per account. Don’t create accounts by automated means.

Don’t use Driftnote to break the law, to store or distribute material that is illegal where you are, to harass anyone, or to attack the service — no scraping, no probing for weaknesses on deployments you don’t own, no attempts to reach other people’s data.

Fiction is fiction. Writing a villain is not endorsing one, and nothing here polices what a story is about. What is prohibited is conduct, not subject matter.

AI mode is optional, off by default, and requires your own Anthropic API key. You pay Anthropic directly for what you use, and your agreement with them governs those requests. Anything a model returns is a suggestion, offered without any warranty that it is accurate, original, or fit for your purpose. Check it before you rely on it.

Driftnote is provided as it is, with no warranty of any kind. It may be unavailable, may contain faults, and may lose data — particularly in the signed-out mode, where the only copy is in browser storage that you or your browser can clear.

Settings downloads a complete backup in one click. Take one. To the fullest extent the law allows, nobody involved in making Driftnote is liable for lost writing, lost profits, or any indirect or consequential loss.

Driftnote’s software, design and name remain the property of their owner. Using the app grants you the right to use it, and nothing more — not to copy it, resell it, or pass it off as your own.

You can stop at any time, and delete your account and its contents from Settings. An account may be suspended or removed if it is used in the ways described above, or if keeping it would break the law.

These terms may change. The date at the top will change with them, and anything that materially affects your rights will be sent to the email address on your account before it takes effect. Continuing to use Driftnote after a change means accepting it.
